As part of a larger research study investigating humour in music therapy with persons dementia, this article details how therapists perceive, embody and experience their practice. Three focus groups ( N = 9) were organised resulting data analysed through arts-based reflexive methods.
 Building on Schenstead’s (2012) articulation reflexivity, two distinct overlapping forms thinking improvisation are highlighted; self-reflexivity collaborative-reflexivity. Finlay’s (2011) phenomenological lifeworld-oriented questions used to explicate dimensions experiences frame broad thematic reflections. Particular correspondence between as way being explored performatively group involving the first author.
 The findings from synthesis offer insight into conceive work supportive relational bonding, also distancing defensive behaviour.
